I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver. Her family has lost a loved one, New Jersey has lost a trailblazing leader, and the students of our state have lost a strong supporter of opportunity and greater access to postsecondary education. Throughout her public service career, including as Lieutenant Governor, Sheila Oliver promoted the work of the New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) to make college more affordable. We at HESAA mourn the loss of our friend and champion. In February 2022, Lieutenant Governor Oliver took time out of her busy schedule to address HESAA's staff as the keynote speaker at our annual Black History Month celebration. In addition to sharing her personal journey, she graciously drew connections between her storied career and lifelong commitment to social justice and the work of HESAA's dedicated public servants. HESAA's initiatives are part of Sheila Oliver's legacy; in her honor HESAA will continue our efforts to create opportunities for New Jersey students and families to advance their lives and careers through higher education pathways. The Oliver family is in all our thoughts during this difficult time.
