In a joint decision, the New Jersey Higher Education Student
Assistance Authority (HESAA) and the New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund
(EOF) announced the extension of the State deadline to renew State aid. For
current recipients of the New Jersey Tuition Aid Grant (TAG), the Governor's
Urban Scholarship (GUS), NJSTARS and NJSTARS II, the deadline to complete the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to renew their funding is now
June 1, 2017. Originally slated for an April 15, 2017 deadline, the timeline was
extended to June 1 to accommodate the current disabled use of the federal Data
Retrieval Tool (DRT). The DRT is a key tool provided by the Internal Revenue
Service for FAFSA filers. The DRT expedites the FAFSA process and reduces filing
errors. While students can still file their FAFSA without the DRT, doing so is
more cumbersome and time consuming.
In light of the IRS announcement and the fact that this is the first
year the new State deadlines were scheduled to be implemented, HESAA and EOF
announced this one-time filing extension for renewal students. The April 15
deadline is now extended to June 1, 2017. The deadline for new students will
remain September 15, 2017. Both HESAA and EOF encourage all students to complete the FAFSA well
before the June 1 deadline. The sooner students apply, the earlier they can make
informed decisions about the 2017-2018 academic year.
